The German Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co (WKC) M1895 bayonet and scabbard is a highly collectible military antique, primarily manufactured in Solingen between 1895 and 1901 for the Chilean M1895 Mauser rifle. These "export Mauser" bayonets are renowned for their high-quality German craftsmanship, often featuring steel supplied by the famous Krupp steelworks.
Key Identification Features
Authentic Chilean M1895 bayonets produced by WKC typically include the following markings and physical characteristics:
- Maker Mark: Stamped with "Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co. Solingen" on the reverse ricasso.
- Chilean Crest: The Chilean national crest (often including a star) is typically stamped on the obverse ricasso.
- Krupp Steel Mark: Three intertwined circles (symbolizing seamless railway wheels) represent the Krupp steel used for the blade.
Collector's Note
While the M1895 design was widely exported, WKC was one of the premier manufacturers. Other versions of this bayonet were also produced by OEWG in Steyr, Austria, though the WKC Solingen versions are particularly prized for their historical connection to the "City of Blades".
