Hornady developed their Handgun Hunter line of ammunition for full compliance with certain jurisdictions’ bans on lead bullets. This 357 Magnum round’s nontoxic MonoFlex is made of solid copper – but the hard-hitting bullet is hardly a compromise when it comes to terminal performance!
The MonoFlex’s nose cavity contains a rubber-like polymer substance called “elastomer.” When the MonoFlex plunges into a quarry or a threat’s soft tissue, its elastomer filling compresses to promote faster and wider terminal expansion than a traditional JHP could provide.
Copper is much tougher than lead, and the MonoFlex lacks a core and jacket that could separate from each other. That’s how the bullet manages to retain at least 95% of its weight and conserve the momentum it needs to penetrate deeply. The monolithic bullet quite naturally can’t deposit lead fouling in a barrel, and it’s safe for your Henry or other lever-action rifle.
Hornady loads these dual-purpose hunting/self-defense cartridges in Nebraska with top shelf brass cases, Boxer primers and low-fouling propellant. The round’s 1,250 fps muzzle velocity (8” test barrel) enables it to slap a 100-yard target with 297 ft lbs of energy.
