The Carcano M91 TS (Moschetto Modello 1891 per Truppe Speciali) is a compact 6.5x52mm bolt-action carbine designed for Italian special troops (engineers, artillery, machine gunners) during WWI and WWII. Featuring a 17.7-inch barrel, it is shorter than the standard infantry rifle, often with a unique side-mounted bayonet lug.
Key Specs and Features:
- Action: 6-shot Mannlicher-style clip-fed bolt action.
- Caliber: 6.5x52mm Carcano.
- Barrel Length: Approx. inches (450mm).
- Weight: Lighter than the standard M91 long rifle, similar to cavalry carbines.
- Sights: Usually equipped with a rear sight adjustable from 600 to 1,500 meters, with a fixed 300-meter battle sight.
- Distinctions: Unlike the cavalry carbine, it rarely has a folding bayonet; it often has a transverse (side) bayonet lug.
- Variants: The M91/24 (converted long rifles) and M91/28 (purpose-built with smaller, fixed sights) are related TS models.
Performance:
The 6.5mm cartridge was a pioneering small-caliber, high-velocity round. While often described as less smooth than a Mauser, the Carcano action is functional, with the TS carbine serving well as a close-quarters weapon. The rifle uses a non-rotating bolt head, with locking lugs on the front of the bolt. The M91 TS was extensively used in both World Wars.
